Washington, D.C.

J. Edgar Hoover Building

Eli stepped off the elevator, took a sharp right turn, and walked down the hall toward the director’s suite.

“You ever been up here before?” Kat walked next to him and kept his hurried pace.

“His office or this floor?”

“The director’s office.”

“Nope.”

Arriving at the desk, Eli handed one of his cards to the director’s assistant, Annie.

She took the card and looked up with a warm smile. “Go ahead inside, Agent Payne; the director has been awaiting your arrival. Yours as well, Agent Stone.”

As Eli stepped inside the office. It looked smaller than he expected. A large cherry desk sat near the far wall, and several stacks of papers near a simple brass reading lamp adorned the desk. A small round table sat in the corner closest to the entrance, with four chairs and two leather couches facing each other near the center of the room. Lining the walls were shelves filled from floor to ceiling with books, plaques, and other keepsakes. Several pieces of artwork hung on the walls, the most vivid an epic five-foot-long landscape oil painting of Monument Valley. A fireplace on the wall crackled and hissed as a fire roared.

Director Ludington stood as Eli and Kat entered, and he walked around the desk to meet them between the couches.

“Director, good to see you again. May I introduce Probationary Agent Katherine Stone.”

Ken had a firm grip and gave Eli’s hand a solid shake. His eyes left Eli and looked at Kat, whose hand he shook as well. “Ah yes, a pleasure to meet you, Agent Stone. You go by Kat, correct?”

“That’s right, sir.”

“Hope Eli is treating you well?” The director shook her hand. “He’s got a reputation of being slightly, umm, challenging.” He said with a wink.

Kat laughed. “You know each other?”

“Yes, we do. Eli didn’t tell you?”

Kat jabbed her elbow into Eli’s right rib, and he winced in discomfort. “No, he failed to mention that on our long drive here.” Her piercing eyes revealed her displeasure.

“I was going to tell you,” Eli said as he darted his gaze away from hers.

“Tell her how we met, Eli.” The director said.

“Well, we played on the Bureau’s softball team.”

“The FBI has a softball team?” Kat asked.

The director nodded. “Several.”

“And you played together?”

“Nooo,” Eli said in a drawn-out manner. “We were on opposite teams. The director has a C-level team made up of all the big dogs.”

The director let out a deep laugh; his voice inflection sounded like an old engine as it sputtered back to life. “We played against each other for the league championship three years ago.”

“That was one hell of a game, sir.” A wide smile covered Eli’s face.

“And I still have the scar to prove it.” The director pulled back a tuff of hair, revealing a one-inch scar on his scalp.

“Yikes,” Kat said. “You got that playing softball?”

“I got that from Agent Payne. It felt like I got hit by a freight train.”

“What?” Kat asked, unable to hide the surprise in her voice.
